Primary, Physical Sports Education Premium

As a result of our efforts and the way in which we spent our allocated money, over the previous years we have regularly achieved the Bronze School Games Award. This recognises pupil participation, school events, the PE curriculum and the way in which PE is taught.


We believe that physical education, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is a unique and vital contributor to a pupil’s physical, social and intellectual development and well-being. We should consider the body as an instrument through which it is possible to learn rather than simply a unit which must be kept fit. As part of the PE curriculum we develop physical skills which can be performed with increasing competency and confidence which contribute to a healthy lifestyle, as well enabling children to make positive decisions about what they eat. Physical education at our school develops a child’s personal qualities in order to promote leadership, positive attitudes and team work. Also we offer opportunities for pupils to compete in a variety of intra and inter school sports as well as promoting opportunities for creative and problem solving activities.


To develop skilful use of the body, the ability to remember, repeat and refine actions and to perform them with increasing control, co-ordination and fluency [acquiring and developing].
To develop an increasing ability to select, link and apply skills, tactics and compositional ideas [selecting and applying] and to develop artistic and aesthetic appreciation within and through movement.
To improve observational skills and the ability to describe and make simple judgements on their own and others’ work, and to use their observations and judgements to improve performance [improving and evaluating]
To develop an understanding of the effects of exercise on the body, and an appreciation of the value of safe exercising [knowledge and understanding of fitness and health] and to promote a healthy active lifestyle.

Each year in KS1 pupils will be taught 4 areas of activity: games, gymnastics, multi-skills and dance, using indoor and outdoor environments as appropriate. (See appendix 1 for sequence of teaching (coverage).
Each year in KS2 pupils will be taught 5 areas of activity: 3 must be games, gymnastics, dance and 2 are chosen from swimming, athletics and outdoor and adventurous activities. Swimming will be taught throughout KS2 on an annual basis during the summer term. (See appendix 1 for sequence of teaching (coverage).
All pupils to receive at least 2 hours of high quality PE per week. In both key stages the hall will be used for 1 hour per week except during winter months when KS1 will receive 2 hours of hall term per week. The rest of the time is to be made up with use of outdoor facilities and 5-a-day-TV.
Basic skills are continually taught in all year groups to consolidate and underpin essential elements of physical education in our school. E.g. controlling the body’s movements, linking movements together, rules and procedures for safe activity, preparation and recovery from exercise and appraising and evaluating performance in order to improve.
Providing progression in all areas of physical learning e.g. complexity of the task, detail and analysis.
Pupils will be involved in activities for performing, selecting and applying, evaluating and using the information to improve performance and developing their understanding of fitness and health through open/divergent tasks which provide pupils with the opportunity to explore, create, solve problems. Closed/ practice type tasks which enable specific skills to be developed and refined; observation and evaluation tasks which provide the opportunity for pupils to develop their knowledge and understanding of what makes an effective performance and use the information to improve.
Every attempt will be made to fully integrate children of all abilities, cultures, religious beliefs and genders, into participating in physical activities with other children.
Differentiation will be evident in all physical activities either by outcome or the designated task.
Where appropriate physical education will be taught in a cross curricular manner to further promote opportunities for: communication, problem solving, thinking, application of number, IT, and team work skills.
Physical activity will promote social, moral and cultural learning.
As part of our links to the Witchford School Sports Partnership children are encouraged to take part in a range of sporting festivals which promote the values of the Olympic Games.
All Physical Education activities adhere to the guidelines set out in ‘Safe Practice in Physical Education and School Sport’ BAALPE (British Association of Advisors and Lecturers in Physical Education) 2008.
All staff work to the same safety standards and use the same procedures in PE. The PE Lead supports the induction of new staff in the expectations, use of equipment and apparatus and familiarity of the schemes of work.
Pupils are made aware of safety issues specific to activities as the activities are being taught.
There is an expectation that any staff involved in the PE lesson will be dressed in appropriate clothing for the activity. This should involve a change of clothes and footwear.
All pupils are expected to wear a different set of clothes, appropriate to the activity.
Pupils should have long hair tied back with hair friendly bands or cloth alice bands. Fringes will need to be clipped back so they do not obstruct the eyes.
Pupils should not wear any jewellery in PE lessons.
The equipment is regularly checked by the PE lead but the maintenance and safety of all equipment and apparatus is the responsibility of all staff and any issues must be raised with the PE Lead as they arise.
The learning environments for PE are the hall and the playground and field areas and the opportunity to use SHSCC’S Astroturf. The hall is regularly cleaned and swept after lunch to ensure it is clean for barefoot work. The hard court areas, field and Astroturf are safe and free from hazards. There is adequate lighting and ventilation in all of the storage areas and the learning environments.
The core development group is responsible for the leadership of PE within the school and is, in turn, responsible to the Head teacher. The PE Lead is to evaluate the teaching of PE, the effectiveness of the schemes of work and the delivery of sport.
Children have the opportunity to attend a range of after school sports clubs and activities.
All staff to complete record sheets of pupils’ participation in PE as well as assessing against the progression of skills which will be monitored by the core development group.
All staff have the opportunity to receive regular professional training through the Witchford School Sports Partnership. Teachers receive regular training and exemplar lessons taught by specialist trained PE teacher in order to develop own practice and progression.

Swimming at Park Lane

Our children swim between Years 2 and 4, and if they cannot swim confidently then we continue to take them. This is paid for through a voluntary contribution from Parents/Carers; almost everyone pays the full amount. We are really grateful for the support from Parents/Carers, as swimming is an important life skill and it is vital that all children get this opportunity.
